“안녕하세요” (annyeonghaseyo) is the most common, polite way to greet someone in Korean. Literally meaning “Are you at peace?” it’s suitable for everyday interactions, whether you’re talking to a teacher, a boss, or a stranger.
If you’re greeting friends or people your own age, the casual version is “안녕” (annyeong), similar to a friendly “hi.” However, use this only when you’re sure informality is appropriate. Korean culture values respect and hierarchy, so err on the side of politeness when in doubt.
Practice your pronunciation, watch Korean shows for natural examples, and remember: showing politeness goes a long way in Korean culture.
