When you try to update personal information or perform important actions on Xiaohongshu (also known as Red Note) and other Chinese platforms, you might see the prompt “请先绑定手机或实名认证后再修改”. This phrase in Chinese means:
“Please bind your phone number or complete real-name verification before making changes.”
A few questions may arise: Can I use my phone number? How do I use my passport for real-name verification? Below is a step-by-step guide.
Tap “Me” at the bottom right corner, then tap the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner.
In the sliding menu, tap Settings.
In the settings menu, select Account Security.
Under Account Security, tap Mobile.
Enter your phone number and verification code on the following screen to complete the binding process.
Why is real-name verification required?
It’s needed to meet the platform’s requirement for authentic user identities, reducing fake accounts or illegal activity.
How does it work?
On the Account Security page, tap Real-name Verification.
On the verification page, tap “居民身份证” (Resident ID).
In the pop-up menu, select “外国护照” (Foreign Passport).
Fill in the required information. Below is a screenshot showing the Chinese and English labels. Finally, tap Submit Now.
You’ll see a success screen indicating your submission. It typically takes about three business days to complete the verification process.
Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to unlock any restrictions on editing your account information or using additional features. We hope this information helps you navigate Chinese platforms more smoothly. Enjoy using Xiaohongshu!
